Fulton Bank to Help Fund New City School, More Funding Needed

We are glad to report that Fulton Bank will be helping to fund the start-up of New City School.  While this initial gift is very helpful, the school still needs to raise nearly 100K in order to open its doors in September 2013.  We encourage donors and and supports to contact us at [email protected].

Archived Release (October 2, 2012):

On October 2, the founding board of New City School of Harrisburg announced plans to open the doors of a new school in September, 2013 (now extended to September, 2014). Board chair Dr. Christopher Perrin describes the school as an urban school aimed at the renewal of the city by means of a robust, classical and liberal arts curriculum operated in the context of close, collaborative community. The school will be patterned in several ways after Logos Academy, an urban, liberal arts school in the city of York.

New City School plans to offer grades Pre-K through 2 during its first year of operation, and then will add a grade each year until the school operates as a fully-staffed PreK-8 school. The school plans to operate the school initially at the facility of Second City Church on Verbeke Street in the city.

The school will purposefully seek students from across the city from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in order to reflect the diversity of the city in its student population. The school will be operated out of the tradition of classical, Christian education but will welcome students from various religious and cultural backgrounds.

With 11 months to go before the school starts, the New City School Board is already busy planning and preparing for the first day of school this coming September. Advancement efforts have begun and a donor desert will be held at Second City Church (251 Verbeke Street) on November 27 at 7pm. Curriculum planning is also underway, and facility planning and preparation are soon beginning. The school will also begin hosting information events for families interested in learning more about the school. The first “Information Night” will be held sometime in November and continue on a monthly basis.

New City School plans to offer significant scholarships to families who otherwise could not afford a private education, and is seeking significant funding through the Pennsylvania Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program by which business can donate money for New City School in lieu of their state tax obligation. New City School will also seek donations from small and large donors to ensure the ongoing viability of the school and to provide scholarships to under-served children in the city of Harrisburg.

After the school raises $300,000, the board will then hire a Head of School and the first set of full-time teachers.

Those interested in helping support the school financially or coming to the donor dessert on Nov.27 (formerly Oct. 30) should contact board member Rebecca James at [email protected].
